Return to all developmentsSituated in the heart of the Surrey countryside, Horne is a rural village and civil parish in the District of Tandridge. The parish includes the hamlet of Newchapel, where the British Wildlife Centre is situated. The centre, opened in 1997, has a collection of over 40 native species of wildlife and the UK’s first walk-through red squirrel enclosure.
Hornecourt Wood, to the north in Outwood is a Site of Special Scientific Interest managed by The National Trust. In the Spring, the woods are filled with spectacular displays of primroses, wood anemones and bluebells. Close to the National Trust car park is Outwood Mill, the oldest working post mill in Britain. Built in 1665, the mill was still working until 1996 and can still produce corn if required.
Almost adjacent to the development was a small wartime grass airfield with two steel mesh runways. The RAF needed to acquire additional airfields in the southeast of England and these were known as Advance Landing Grounds. Horne was the only one in Surrey. The three squadrons of spitfires stationed there, represented nations from around the world and were among the first over the beaches on D-Day, 6th June 1944. There is a small memorial to commemorate the airfield in Bones Lane.
The airfield is now encompassed by Horne Park Golf, a 9 hole, par 69 described by Great Britain’s Rio Olympic Golf Captain as “an outstanding, testing course, that does not take all day”. The course also has a covered driving range, dedicated chipping green, a practice green and an indoor golf simulator.
For the racing enthusiast, Lingfield Park Racecourse is within 5 miles to the east. One of the oldest established racecourses in the country, it holds regular race meetings and combines National Hunt and Flat racing on turf and all weather tracks. There are also many equestrian facilities in the surrounding area.
The village of Smallfield, 4 minutes by car, offers local shops and a doctors surgery. A larger selection of retail outlets can be found in the town of Horley, within 5 miles to the west and East Grinstead approximately 5.5 miles South East. Horley also has a leisure centre, which features a 25 metre six-lane swimming pool, fitness gym and free weights, four-court multi use sports hall and an exercise and dance studio.
Burstow Primary School situated in Wheelers Lane, Smallfield is an independent mixed school for pupils between the ages of 3 to 11 years. The nearby villages of Copthorne and Lingfield have a good choice of nursery, infant, primary, junior and preparatory schools. For preparatory and secondary education, the highly regarded Lingfield College, an Independent Day School, accommodates boys and girls from 2-18 years and Imberhorne School in East Grinstead is a co- educational school for pupils aged 11-18 years.
