If one desires a more cosmopolitan shopping experience, a drive of around 25 minutes brings you to the spa town of Royal Tunbridge Wells with a diverse array of shops, excellent restaurants and bars. By contrast, the Pantiles are a charming historic part of the town dating back to the Georgian era.
For those interested in sports there is a wide selection including football, cricket and lawn bowls, all of whom meet at Maresfield Recreation Ground with its pavilion and bar. The village football clubs cater for all ages and run two teams in the Mid-Sussex Leagues. The Mighty Mares cricket club was established in 1756 and has two Saturday sides that take part in the East Sussex League. A short distance away at Batts Bridge Road, Maresfield Lawn Tennis Club, Wealden Bowls and Uckfield Gymnastics Club are all located. Uckfield Leisure Centre, just 2 miles to the south has a swimming pool, gym and an indoor sports hall where you can play badminton, table tennis, basketball, netball and football.
It also has an external artificial football pitch. Maresfield is also The Sussex home of County Polo. Oakwood Park Polo Club was the first polo club in Sussex to be fully Hurlingham Polo Association affiliated, and boasts both summer and winter facilities.
Piltdown Golf Club, just 2 miles away was created in 1904 when Count Munster of Maresfield Park House leased an area of Piltdown Common and the first ten holes, designed by professional Jack Rowe were carved out.
For Anglers, Underhill Fishing Lake in Maresfield is a small but pretty water, stocked with many coarse fish including some good size tench and perch. The lake is run by Crowborough and District Anglers Association, which began life in 1948 when a group of young men returned from the war. Initially the club was set up to provide day trips for sea anglers but over time freshwater fishing and course water were added.
